LIBERTY CORNER, N.J. (Jan. 16, 2020) – In an effort to make the game more accessible for Spanish-speaking golf communities, the United States Golf Association (USGA), in cooperation with the PGA of America, will host its second-ever Rules of Golf Workshop in Spanish from Jan. 24-27 in Orlando, Fla.
The USGA will utilize Spanish print and video educational materials that, for the first time, use a neutral translation, which makes the material less regional and more accessible to a broader Hispanic audience.
“Growing up as a golfer in Puerto Rico, I’ve seen firsthand the passion that the Hispanic community has for golf,” said Francisco Rivera, the USGA’s assistant director of Rules operations. “As a global leader for advancing the game, the USGA is proud to lead this important effort toward making the game more accessible for those who speak Spanish as a first language.”
As part of the overall effort to better serve the Hispanic golf community in the United States, its territories and Mexico, the USGA released a Spanish version of the Rules of Golf app last February in conjunction with Rules Modernization. The USGA also led, with support from the Mexican Golf Federation and Puerto Rico Golf Association, the effort to translate the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf, the Rules of Golf and the Player’s Edition of the Rules of Golf.
Most recently, the USGA completed the translation of more than 700 Rules practice questions and launched a Rules page on USGA.org in Spanish, which enables Hispanic visitors to contact the USGA with Rules questions in their native tongue.
