Storylines for Week 4 of U.S. Open Local Qualifying

This is the fourth and final part in a weekly series on the path to the 126th U.S. Open Championship, which will be contested June 18-21, at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. The two-stage process begins with 18-hole local qualifying held at 109 sites in 43 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico. Players who advance will join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes at 13 sites between May 18 and June 8.

► Two sons of U.S. Open champions will tee it up in the final week of local qualifying. Todd Miller, 46, is the son of 1973 U.S. Open champion and former NBC lead golf analyst, Johnny Miller. Todd followed in his father’s footsteps and played golf at Brigham Young University and is currently the director of golf for the program. He is scheduled to play May 11 at Willow Creek Country Club, in Sandy, Utah.

Sean Jacklin, 34, is the son of 1970 U.S. Open champion Tony Jacklin. Tony played in seven U.S. Opens and four U.S. Senior Opens during his career. Sean qualified for the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club, in Brookline, Mass., and is scheduled to tee it up at Vineyards Country Club, in Naples, Fla., on May 11.

► Garrett Rank, 38, is an accomplished Canadian amateur golfer and veteran NHL referee, who has played in 25 USGA championships, including a runner-up finish in the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur at Conway Farms Golf Club, in Lake Forest, Ill. He qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills when he advanced through local qualifying in Florida before earning co-medalist honors at the final qualifier at Ansley Golf Club, in Roswell, Ga. Rank, who has worked second-round games in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs, starts his 2026 qualifying journey in his home country on May 11 at St. Thomas (Ontario) Golf & Country Club.

► Jonathan Byrd, 48, owns five PGA Tour wins and was on the 1999 USA Walker Cup Team. The Clemson University graduate has played in five U.S. Opens, including a top 15 at the 2003 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields. Byrd and his son, Jackson, 19, are both entered in the Newnan, Ga., site at Canongate –on White Oak on May 11. Jackson is a freshman on the Clemson golf team.

► A week after Shane Bacon advanced out of his local qualifier in Milford, Conn., fellow golf analyst Notah Begay III is playing in the Albuquerque, N.M. qualifier at the UNM Championship Golf Course on May 12. Begay, who works for NBC and Golf Channel, owns four PGA Tour wins and has qualified for three U.S. Opens, including a 22nd-place finish in 2000 at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. Begay was also a member of the 1995 USA Walker Cup Team at Royal Porthcawl.

► Ricky Barnes, 45, has played in five U.S. Opens, including the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens at Bethpage Black on Long Island. The 2002 U.S. Amateur champion finished runner-up to Lucas Glover in 2009 Barnes is playing at Phoenix (Ariz.) Country Club on May 11.
