The Curtis Cup
Awarded biennially since 1932
Margaret and Harriot Curtis of Boston advocated for a women’s international team match after their first overseas competitive venture in 1905. Due to financial challenges, the concept did not come to fruition until 1932, when the USGA agreed to administer the competition and fund an American team to compete against a team from Great Britain and Ireland. The Curtis Cup Match was born and the modest silver bowl, donated by the Curtis sisters in 1927, was formally accepted as the prize for the winning side. The cup’s inscription “to stimulate friendly rivalry among the women golfers of many lands” epitomizes the international understanding and goodwill that have become hallmarks of the biennial Curtis Cup Match.
